Representation in the European Parliament
The European Parliament represents the citizens of the European Union. It is directly elected every five years, with the most recent elections taking place in 2019. Belgium is represented by 22 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), who are elected by Belgian citizens.
Responsibilities of MEPs
MEPs play a vital role in the European Union's decision-making process. They have the power to propose new laws, amend existing laws, and approve the EU's budget. MEPs also oversee the work of the European Commission and other EU institutions.
Elections in 2024
The next European Parliament elections will be held on 6-9 June 2024. Belgian citizens will have the opportunity to vote for their representatives in the European Parliament. The results of the elections will determine the composition of the European Parliament for the next five years.
